Black Swan

Leda with the Swan (1917) by the Russian Art Nouveau painter Nikolai Kalmakov (1873-1955). Most impressing to me seems, that it’s a black swan. Was it only because of the colour or should it indicate some kind of evil?

  1. Stunning use of colour! As to the black swan angle, who knows but the concept of evil is an intriguing one. This is by far the most sexual version of this tale I have come across to be quite honest. That beak is a tad naughty and suggestive as well... if you stretch your imagination a tad.

  2. You are absolutely right about the beak. Haven't thought of it before.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

  3. Swan Lake has two swan princesses, Odette the white and her evil double Odile the black, who lead Ziegried astray.
