Norman Lindsay was a dedicated Australian artist, author and family man. There were no unsavory activities That I know of.
He had some legal and censorship problems, but they were due to his honest depiction of male, female sexuality and the fact that he was devoutly anti religious. He did a Jesus on the cross etching that lampooned the strange idea that Christ's torture and and death was meant to save humanity. Lindsay was repelled by this morbid and illogical idea... This etching upset the church, the state and devout Christians generally.
So what I say. It's an artists job to tell the truth as they see it. If that means lampooning some sacred cow and upsetting narrow minded prudes and puritans... so much the better.

Ah Norman Lindsay. I have seen a bit of his work but I have written about him several times for different aspects of his life.
ReplyDeleteHe was involved in many unsavory activities, to put it politely. I imagine that was part of the price he paid for his skill as an artist.
Sorry but I don't know much about Lindsay's personal life.
